8 Things to do to Get Ready for School

8 Things to do to Get Ready for School

It is almost time for school to start! The first day of student learning is Wednesday, September 9. We know this year looks different, but we can't help but be excited. We want to help you feel as comfortable and confident as possible as we start the new year.

See this checklist of eight things to do to get ready for a new year and distance learning. And don’t forget to tune in to one of our Distance Learning family webinars on September 2 for the latest updates on Distance Learning in Fall 2020. We’ll have two Zoom sessions: 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

1. Pickup a Device and Get Connected

This fall every individual student will get a digital device to engage in distance learning. Many devices have already been distributed. If you are in need of a new device or repair, reach out to your school.

If you need internet assistance, please connect with your school for a hotspot.

For school supplies, check your school's website for a list of items your teacher recommends.

2. Meet With Your Teacher

Connect with your teacher on Family Connection Days, September 3, 4 or 8. Families and students will connect with their classroom teacher (elementary) or advisory teacher (secondary) on Zoom for 15 to 30 minutes.

Share your student’s strengths and needs. Bring questions or concerns about supporting your student. Schools will reach out to schedule your Family Connection meeting.

3. Tour Your Learning Platforms

Explore tools your students will use during Fall 2020. Practice logging in and take these platforms for a test drive before your first day. If you need help logging on to your learning platform, connect with your teacher.

  • Pre-K and Elementary: SeeSaw and Zoom
  • Middle and High School: Google Classroom and Zoom

4. Bookmark Tech Support

Have questions about your school-issued device, hotspot or connecting to the internet? Visit our technology support page for instructions and who to call for help.

5. Connect With Us

Update your information, including home address, phone number, health information and emergency contact, by logging into ParentVUE through an internet browser, or call your school office.

Check our homepage often for the latest news and upcoming events.

Like Highline Schools on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram. We share important updates and fun stories. Get shared and get talking by using the hashtag #OurHighlineStory and #HighlineProud.

6. Apply for Free School Meals

Use our online form to apply for free or reduced-price school meals. Starting in September, there will be a cost to students who do not qualify for meal benefits. If your child attends one of our 18 community-qualifying schools, you automatically qualify for benefits and do not need to apply.

Because we are packaging meals to go, you must pre-order your child’s meals every week. See school meal pick-up locations and times on our website. Pre-order forms will be available on September 1.

7. Know Your Rights & Responsibilities

Review the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook

8. Get Set for Your School Day

Identify a quiet, consistent location if possible. This could be a kitchen table, desk, or corner. Minimize distractions so your child can focus and engage.

We realize every family's schedule is different. Please work with your teacher to make sure your child stays on track and engaged.
